A/N: This post should've gone up much earlier (which is to say, actually on December 1st) but my computer is Giving Me Trouble. I might post about that more in the near future. Thank god for work computers that I can update Dreamwidth on!

What up friends and fiends! It is the month of Dice-mber, and I will be featuring one(1) set of dice every day this month. Hm, December is a long month with 31 days. Do I have 31 sets of dice???

*checks the spreadsheet*
*of course there's a spreadsheet*
*there better be a spreadsheet, I have 1341 sets2 of dice from at least 22 different manufacturers, how would I possibly keep track without a spreadsheet?*

So I made a list of 31 of those sets --trying to get a variety of things I like, personal importance, and as many different creators as possible-- and I rolled some dice to decide on the order, and now I'm going to spend the rest of the month posting about them.

Yes, of *course* I will include pictures. I spent about four days this summer sitting in the sunshine and positioning the shinies *just right*.

I hope you enjoy this project as much as I do!

1: AT THE TIME OF THIS WRITING, which was more than a month prior to the event, because I wanted to actually freaking commit to doing the whole thing! This is rare and stunning of me, I know. Anyways, I probably now own more than that.

2: Well, okay, technically not everything that's worthy of the spreadsheet is a *set* of dice. There's various groups of d6s, promotional dice from conventions (or from Bee Coffee!), random metal dice gotten from Foam Brain mystery bags, a small number of one-offs, that sort of thing.

Dicember Day 1
Rainbow Confetti Dice
(Obtained 2022 02, as a mystery set from Dice Envy)

Dicember Day 1 - Rainbow Confetti

Most dice sets are seven dice, identified by the number of sides: d20, d12, d10, d%, d8, d6, d4. (a d% or "percentile" is a d10 written in multiples of 10 instead of 1. You can roll a d10 and d% to get any integer from 00-99). Dice Envy goes a step further with their originals though, and sells them in groups of ten. You get a second d6 (with their lion logo on it), an "infinity" d4 (it's their special design and it's pretty neat), and...a chonky d20!

d20s get a lot of extra love, since they're frequently the most commonly rolled in rpgs. But the classic icosahedron is just a _nice shape_ as well, and having one that's extra big is extremely satisfying to play with. I really appreciate that Dice Envy makes it part of their sets as a matter of course, to give you something bold and blocky and fun to play with!

I like getting mystery sets of dice, especially as a way to "try out" new companies. Usually they're a little cheaper, sometimes the packaging is quite cute, and it's a good way to get something unexpected. The rainbows in this set definitely qualify --it's right up my alley, but not something I necessarily would've grabbed on my own!

Edited to add: Also this photo is perhaps less good than the rest will be because this is a set of dice I earned via my dailies, *after* the summer when I took all my photos. What're dailies? That'll come up later, I'm sure!

Dicember Day 2
Mosquitoes in Amber Percentile Dice.
(Obtained 2021 09, made by AngryPomDice)

Note: Today's dice involve dead bugs. If you aren't into that, you might want to skip the image )

You may have noticed by now, that I am primarily a collector of *sets* of dice. When I was a wee baby diceaholic, I reveled in getting the pound-o-assorted, in "scoop a bowl out of our giant glittering bin", in "dreams of scrooge mcducking the Chessex booth".

But in diceaholic round two ("this time I have a salary!") I am much more concerned with pretty _pretty_ matched sets of seven (or eight, or ten, or eleven...). I want everything to line up Just So. And...as a mathematician, I'm a sucker for a good quintet of platonic solids. So these dice are an exception, but there was never any question about getting them.

When AngryPom announced that they would have a set of these for the Final Ever Store Drop, I set multiple alarms on my phone. I planned. I _camped_. I don't normally do that kind of nonsense, I find it too stressful usually, but come on! My amateur-entomologist-ass was absolutely gonna be sucked in by the idea of dice with _actual mosquitoes_ in them. I mean, what could beat that?

Plus, now if I ever need to roll up a dinosaur character for a Runequest game, I have the _obvious_ set to play with. SUE would be proud!

Here's one more close-up for good measure. )
