Dicember Day 16: Prism Dice

I don't play favourites with my dice.

Seriously, while I was doing the photography for this project, one of the best things about it was that I _didn't get bored_ --every time I pulled out a new set to document, I found myself rolling them around in my hands and admiring the sunlight and the shine. Marie Kondo would be proud of my collection, because nearly all of it sparks outrageous joy! I love all my dice sets very much, and could never choose a favourite!

...but I did take more photos of this set than any other, by like...an order of magnitude. When I finished photographing them, instead of putting them away, I set them to the side and then kept coming back and taking more pictures in between. They are _so gorgeous_.

And I do play favourites with manufacturers! There's a lot of dicemakers and distributers out there who I'm quite fond of, but a chance Etsy search looking for a present for my metamour let me stumble upon DeadEyeDice. They seemed legit, the prices were not at all bad for handmade1, why not try it?

And then the package I received was *so* charmingly wrapped, with little bonus candies and trinkets thrown in, and at that point, I just gotta reward good customer service, right? R-right?

I'm pretty sure I am one of DeadEyeDice's nine people2 and this set was probably the one that clinched it. I love so many of their sets, but this one just takes my breath away and fills my heart with calm every time I gaze upon it. Amazing work!

(I bought the mini-set in the same style, but it has not yet appeared in my Advent Calendar, so I'm impatiently awaiting that one. They sell a chonk d20, much larger than normal, and I am strongly thinking about buying that as well...)

1: It's worth noting that part of why the prices are lower than many other shops offering handmade is because TJ does not polish the dice after removing them from the casts, and there are the occasional cracks or chips. I plain do not care about this, because the positives _far_ outweigh the negatives for me, but YMMV

Dicember Day 17
Googley Eye Dice

Dicember Day 17: Googley Eye Dice

EvergreenBurrow is perhaps most famous for its duck d20 --another rare instance of me receiving dice as a gift--, which was one of the first instances I ever saw of dice with *inclusions*, with little toys or trinkets or decorations embedded inside the resin.

This seems as good a time in the project as any to say "I do not give a flying fuck about balance". Lots of people get extremely worked up about the balance of the dice, are they fair, blah blah blah. I do not care. I don't think that any of these little small-run manufacturers are going to be making dice that are intentionally unbalanced (hard!), I know that inclusions are usually the exact same density as the surrounding material (or their own density is negligible for some of the lighter ones, and I know that a properly *numbered* die circulates the numbers, so that even if a die was weighted to roll a lot of 20s, it will also roll a lot of 2s.

So the fact that EvergreenBurrow makes really cool inclusions dice is something that I can just enjoy for the sheer delight of the matter, and these are one of the best possible inclusions. Because they're googly eyes. Carefully inserted so that they _still google_. Forget those modern liquid core dice I keep seeing (okay, maybe don't, those are rad), these are the future of dice!

Released as an April-Fools-But-For-Realsies kickstarter in 2021, the googley eye dice just consistently make me smile. It's such a hilarious idea for a set of dice! And such an enjoyable thing to roll.

Preface: Obviously I got a little behind on the calendar, so I'm just going to catch up with three days right now. Sorry about that! You'd think pre-writing would mean this wouldn't happen, but *shrug emoji*

Toxic Green Skull Dice

Dicember Day 18: Toxic Skull Dice

So I am _picky_ about inclusions. In fact the original list of dice I was gonna post about included one set that I only felt so-so about, because it was everything I didn't like about dice with inclusions (too twee, not thought out enough with the positioning). This set was on the list specifically to contrast it!

This does inclusion right --the inclusion is distinct enough that you can pretty clearly see what's inside, without having to be careful with the positioning (although almost no inclusions photograph well in my experience). Oh, and for anyone worried about whether inclusions mess up the "fairness" of the die roll? Turns out that ~I don't care~ so never you mind your little head about it.

As a weirdo, I'm a sucker for a good skull, and these definitely get the job done! They are well placed within their dice, and the neon green slime swirl makes for an excellent bit of visual interest. They were one of the first DeadEyeDice sets I obtained, and still one of my favourites (in fact, they're one of my current purse-dice sets, so I always have a set on me!)

Somewhere waiting in the wings, I'm pretty sure I have a set of purple skull dice to find, and I love the idea of combining both sets and rolling me a genderqueer flag of skulls! C'mon, that sentence just feels _super_ metal, right?

(Edited to add later: As it turns out, the purple skulls are in the very current iteration of the incentivesbox! I have a d4 and a d6 and a d12! Genderqueer flag of skulls is gonna have to wait until I finish out this batch, hopefully by the end of January.)
