Jan. 13th, 2024 01:22 amHappy Arisia!!!!!
Quite literally, I am happy, and at Arisia! I am having a very nice time with this, my first night at the con.
I arrived exactly when I expected to, which is shocking mostly because I left half an hour late and fully expected the T to take half an hour longer than it did. In talking about packing yesterday, Ezri suggested "take the rolly-cart" which is normally used for groceries, but made it much simpler to get all my random bags of crap to the con. You know, like stilts and a gallon jug of distilled water for my mom, and some toys to put on the free table. That kind of thing!
The first hour or so was running around to drop things off at the room and get my badge, and do a little fancy-dressing for the evening. I didn't go exceptionally costumey (stripey black-and-white pants, cool arty shirt that Tuesday gave me) but I accessorized incredibly well. The showstopper was a toss-up between the amazing furry vest that I bought in Feb2020 while thrift storing with mek, and my Degas earrings.
(The vest is of a style that I worry I look too much "white girl goes to burning man and wears a war bonnet", but both jere7my and mom were very enthusiastic about how cool and hippie/60s/70s it was. Mom said "Hair" and jere7my said "Pat Benetar" so that feels pretty good. The earrings are framed copies of this painting, which is my favourite piece of "fine art".)
I did a very little bit of doodling while lobby-conning, and a whole bunch of chatting with people. Londo and I had a excellent chat about what we've been up to in the recent and distance past --I haven't seen him since, uh...probably Arisia 2020, which did happen because it was *before* the rest of...you know. 2020.
Eventually, jere7my and I made our way to the Art Show Reception and did a good first pass of the art show. There were many cool arts, and I bought a keen sculpture piece that is just straight up horror aesthetic. I'm very fond of it already, even though I won't be able to go interact with the actual piece until Sunday art pickup.
We finished art and went to House of Toast for a first night party. I got cookie-butter and coffee and silver spray (witness!) and found it very pleasing. jere7my spoke highly of his tinned herring and potato chip. It is good to have a convention party that provides pleasing snax!
The hotel lobby restaurant was too expensive for a casual meal, and the con suite was closed (alas!), so we finished out the night by making ramen with the coffeemaker. It turned out...surprisingly well, considering that this is quite literally just ramen with boiling water poured on it --essentially, cup noodle! Or maybe we were just hungry.
And that was it for the first night. I saw a number of people I like in passing, and look forward to some longer chats with many of them. My plans for the rest of the con are: late night club dancing. Go shopping. Mrs. Hawking. Masquerade. The rest of the time is likely to be super mellow!
I hope you are well. <3
