I woke up this morning and the only thing I can remember of my dream is the following chorus to a pop song I was hearing:

Too-mato, Tuh-mato
Tomato tomato!

I am given to understand that this might have had something to do with NPR (which is why I hate waking up to the radio, because _strangest dreams_.)

But still. Do you have any idea how frustrating it is to be earwormed by a song that doesn't even exist?!

Once upon a time I used to use NPR as an alarm clock and yes, I'm pretty sure I had exactly this happen more than once.

When I'm pretty sure a song that has come into my head actually doesn't exist, however, I generally consider it a work of creativity and try to finish it.

...unless I hate it.

So.... Make it exist! Grab a recorder, and sing/hum/chant/recite as much of the song as you can remember, and then don't stop until it's done. If it's still in your head, do it again, until the whole song, from start to finish is on the recorder.

Then once it's down, you can either it "erase" or if it sounds like it might be a worthwhile song, make it a song.

One day some artist will release a song that has a similar feel and you'll bug all your friends to see if they know what it sounds like when it's only ever been in your head.

This is how Paul McCartney first heard Yesterday and he went around bugging all his friend by singing them a version of the song with the lyrics "Scrambled eggs, oh my darling dear, I love your legs" and when no one owned up to having written it, he wrote new words for it and recorded it.

The rest is music history. :)

You are looking for the song "Tomato" by Slushbox. http://www.amazon.com/Tomato/dp/B00196EENI

Do you also listen to A Way With Words on NPR?

They sequenced the Tomato genome the other day. One of the interstitial songs in coverage of that (I think it was On Point or To the Point) had that refrain.

I have had something similar stuck in my head today, but I know in my case (because I recognize the melody) it's my mind poorly remembering and corrupting the lyrics to one of the songs from "Smash" (which does involve the word tomato, but I'm pretty sure has other words too).
