Mar. 12th, 2013 04:58 pmWay back in...2010?, the Art Institute of Boston hosted a new little event called the Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo, or MICE for short. I went both because I really really like comics and because my totally rad roommate0 had a booth. It was one of my first exposures to the wonderful world of teeny-tiny zine like comics, mostly miniature autobio comics about gender, or things made of three sheets of printer paper stapled together and titled "The Dewey Decimal System is Decadent and Depraved"1, or a rare full colour whopping sixteen pages...still printed out on a home printer and stapled together by hand.
And at one point Ria was in desperate need of a food and so I wound up manning her station for a bit, and oh hey, a sheet of 8-1/2 x 11 and a pen just happened to be at hand.
So I stole a line I had seen some of the REAL 2cartoonists using on Twitter around then, and tore the paper in half and folded it up into a little book (six pages, front and back cover) and titled it "Let's Make Art In Our Artbooks!" I fucked around, drew some stuff, and that was that. After Ria came back, I stretched out on the floor with a pencil, and attempted to make a second one (musing on how difficult it is to draw when you can actually erase your mistakes.)
And that was that, except then the following year at MICE, I had the good sense of mind to make another little artbook. These weren't to *show* anyone, oh gods no. They were just little personal comics to stick in my bag and feel good about later --it is so rare that I complete physical projects, even small ones, I must protect the ones I do.
Except then there was a ...thing4 and I found myself making another edition of Let's Make Art in Our Artbooks, this time around a theme. It made for a charming yet goofy little comic, extremely self-centered, but when have I ever not been thus?
And a few days later at work, I was subbing for an art class, and had nothing much to do for a couple periods. So I bent my hand to making an artbook for the hell of it, about my current State Of The Art.
And then today, I was subbing that class again. And so I made a conscious decision to use my free time to make another little Artbook (this one about pirates).
And oh help me, because these are glorious entertainment and only take me about two hours to complete or so (maybe even less? It's hard to suss out exactly.) They are probably much less interesting to you, because again, I am self-centered, but I have scanned them all in, and am posting them here. For posterity, perhaps, or more likely because I am proud of them and would like you to see them.
It's amazing what a fascinating little burst of creativity can be assembled from a single sheet of paper. Anyways: (Image heavy under cut)

( Let's Make Arrrrrrt in our Artbook )
So yeah, I have made art, in my artbooks even. Given that I already have three, I would like to see if I can average one a week (for this month), so if you have any ideas, or things you'd like to see, toss 'em out there.

MOOP!
0: Ria is my totally rad roommate from college. I had six other roommates, but I identify them using other signifiers. (Nurit and Genni are my totally rad roommates from post college.)
1: This is a real thing. I own this. I should read it, but I'm afraid it would be a letdown after that title.
23: web
3: Isn't this the most delightfully awkward use of footnotes I've used in a good long time?
4: On my sexyfilter? See my next post (which won't be posted until late tonight)! Not on my sexyfilter? Sucks to be you!
