Sep. 16th, 2013 12:43 pmSundries post!
I have many other things to get written, pertaining to Maryland and weddings and how fucking awesome Veronica is and that sort of thing. But in the meantime, let's close some tabs and do some sundries:
*Dude is wandering around the Californiaish area with 3 pack mules. More info is at 3mules.com. The thing that spoke to me most is this, from his "about" section:
As someone who travels almost exclusively by non-car methods, this is a really good observation, and a deeply sad one. I want to bike to Canada someday, it makes me scared to think that I'd never be able to do it without a car.
*On a happier note, do you like the Arrogant Worms? I like the Arrogant Worms! They are releasing another album, and running an IndieGoGo campaign to raise money for it!
*Tamora Pierce is wonderful. This is a really squeeful post explaining some of why.
*So, heaps of classical music is technically in the public domain, being as the creators all died hundreds of years ago. But it turns out you can't just go ahead and use it in your movies or anything, because all the modern recordings are *not* in the public domain. The Musopen Project wants to Set Music Free!. Their current kickstarter is for recording the entire works of Chopin, for anyone to use, for anything.
*(TW: Rape culture): This is the most important thing I have ever learned about what makes comedy good: Punching Up. I want to force anyone who ever makes jokes to read this sometime.

*Dude is wandering around the Californiaish area with 3 pack mules. More info is at 3mules.com. The thing that spoke to me most is this, from his "about" section:
Throughout their travels, The Mules have noticed an ever increasing urban sprawl. Open spaces where they once moved through freely, and sometimes spent the night in a secluded spot, were disappearing. More and more cars filled up the roadways, and the expanding urban infrastructure seemed to serve one purpose: accommodate more automobiles. At the same time, space for other means of self- transportation, such as bicycling, horseback riding and simply walking, were shrinking. Those alternative means of self-travel have often been confined to designated “recreation” areas. Also, as the urban environment exploded, natural habitats have vanished, or been “preserved” in spaces a fraction of the size they once were.
As someone who travels almost exclusively by non-car methods, this is a really good observation, and a deeply sad one. I want to bike to Canada someday, it makes me scared to think that I'd never be able to do it without a car.
