It has been brought to my attention that I am apparently a Mary-Sue.

I am...boggled, at this. Discombobulated, even. I have, in fact, found at least one dumb.

I can't help but admit that mek and Jake (and apparently Swing)'s reasoning is at least a little sound. I myself I have been confused on several occasions by the fact that everyone is into me, or at least likes me very much. I have very long and very spectacular hair. While it's not exactly a well-known fact, I do align myself with the identity of "princess". My name is Katarina for goodness sakes, which is at least a little bit exotic and flowery enough to pass as Mary-Sue.

(Really, it's that first one that's the most damning. People like me for reasons I have attempted but never really succeeded in discerning. Why do you all like me? Is it because The Author is writing you all that way?! I find that both depressing and somewhat comforting, because at least it means you don't all like me for me, an idea I find frankly terrifying. I am nowhere near as awesome as you lot seem to think I am.)

Discuss.

I could say I like you because f!H likes everyone but that would only be partially true. I could say it's 'cause you are awesome but you already know that and want to know why you are so awesome. What it really boils down to is that I cling to you like a clinging thinglike you because you give precious seconds away to me from all the people in your life who are ten times more interesting/fun/awesome than I am, and pay attention to my petty insecurities. And a lot of the time you even know in advance when it's needed. You are awesome because you notice a cellophane person like myself And if there's an Author, then I'm the pathetic, slightly sympathetic character that everyone forgets about by the end of the chapter.

That's why I know you are as awesome as you are and why I likelove you. Just that thing alone.

I think these three attributes go a long way:

  • friendly
  • intelligent
  • explorative

"Explorative" is meant to encompass a number of other attributes such as "open-minded", "daring", "curious", "self-assured" (when it matters), "enthusiastic".

One might also add:

  • non-gender-normative (for me, anyway; maybe for others too)

I keep trying to find a way not to dance around (i.e. avoid) the subject of physical attractiveness, which is definitely in the mix, but I honestly can't say it plays as much of a role in The Big Mystery (i.e. Why Lotsa Peeples Like Sor) as the more personality-related attributes.

My particular attitude toward you may or may not be indicative of how others view you: I seem to have a habit of encountering female people whom I wish I was (to summarize many pages of explanation in four words), which possibly might be described as IRL "Mary Sue"ing. (While you're not in the absolute center of the hyperspheroid encompassing this attribute space, you're definitely not on the fuzzy outer edge of it either.) I don't know if that's a common pattern (even among social misfits) or not, much less whether it applies to your general fanbase (for lack of a better word).

I hope this is helpful.

To [personal profile] woozle's "friendly, intelligent, explorative" I'd add "discoursive": you like to talk/write about the things you think are awesome, in a way that makes your enthusiasm infectious.

Because you gave me back dance; you dragged me along and I "stayed dragged." Sort of, anyway. I miss Scottish.

Because you tell me you like me, and that takes out such a huge anxiety issue in my interactions with people that I can RELAX around you enough to really let myself like you. You are emotionally demonstrative and caring and willing to share parts of yourself with the world, and not only do I admire and appreciate all of that, it puts me more at ease with you than I am with most people. (Honestly, the only thing I'm ever nervous about around you is that I am not quite awesome enough to be your friend, but then you tell me you like me anyway.)

Because you're clever and enthusiastic.

Because being around you, hearing/reading your thought processes, inspires me to think differently and more openly. I like being around people who make me want to improve my thoughts and actions without making me feel guilty that there's room for improvement.

It's in the contract that they make you sign when they hand you your newborn. "You must like this child."

So I have no choice.

S'truth. So many times I wanted to toss one or another of my chillun out the window when they were wee but just couldn't do it 'cause of The Contract. *nod*

I would say the explanation has a strong correlation with the fact that you are your mother's daughter.

Perhaps I should clarify. You are attractive to people not because they know & like your mother, but because you have inherited her charisma.

What's a Mary-Sue?

I like you because you seem to like me. You are good at liking people, and liking them enthusiastically, and that has something to do with them liking you back, because they want to make sure that they treat you with great reverence so that you continue to find them worthwhile.

Also, you are empathetic without being pathetic, which is a very hard-to-achieve balance.

Also, you like math, and you like dance, and you like writing, and nerds of a feather must flock together :)

Because you became ubiquitous, and staying was better than walking away. Your house was home to me, and therefore, you were family. Sure, since then I've been out of touch, but time is a fickle thing, and memories have a way of lasting when you don't want the past to go and there are none newer to usurp them. Sorry.

It's not just that you are awesome, it's that you are awesome to other people. You make them feel awesomer themselves.

But also - the term "mary sue" has gotten a fair bit of over-use and abuse lately, so I object to a perfectly plausible person like yourself being described as it.

I will note that (while I am perfectly willing to believe you are a Mary Sue) you are not the only Mary Sue I know. [livejournal.com profile] cirne failed this test with flying colors back in December.

In my case, it's near impossible for me to hate someone, or at least carry out hating someone. Maybe I was Canadian in a past life....

And, as for past relationships with you, saying "Yes" helped fulfill a personal desire that I was unable to fulfill otherwise. No regrets!
